Intechra Hosts U.S. Officials to Discuss IT Asset Disposition Best Practices

Conducting research on the landscape of existing electronics recycling laws

Jackson, Miss., Jan. 15, 2010 – Intechra recently hosted a delegation of federal government officials at its Dallas facility to discuss resolutions to issues regarding business and consumer e-waste.

Intechra CEO Michael Profit said the discussions were productive for everyone involved.

"At Intechra, it is our job to help clients comply with the maze of regulations impacting the disposition of electronics," Profit said. "We are also aware of the gaps in legislation exploited by unscrupulous electronics recyclers. We welcome any objective analysis that helps frame the public debate over the appropriate level of federal regulation and oversight of the proper disposition of electronic devices."

The U.S Government Accountability Office (GAO) reported last year that a substantial quantity of the millions of electronic devices that consumers and businesses dispose of annually are being handled in ways that pose a significant threat to human health and the environment.

As one of the largest nationwide providers of corporate IT asset disposition, Intechra has years of experience in helping companies comply with the patchwork of state and federal legislation impacting electronics recycling in the U.S.

"We were able to provide a unique perspective of the IT asset disposition industry," Profit said.

Intechra has long been a supporter of the development of industry standards that would set minimum requirements for electronics recyclers and provide for a higher level of transparency. Currently, the electronics recycling industry includes a wide range of firms, some of whom have no regard for human health and the environment. Others, such as Intechra, strive to fully recycle electronics to create a positive impact. Companies needing electronics recycling services are often presented with confusing claims about environmental compliance and find it necessary to invest significant resources to perform their own due diligence. The recent rollout of independent certifications to the Responsible Recycling (R2) standards is an important step forward for industry accountability and transparency.
